Fault Code Description
SPN 84 FMI 8 is set by the Common Powertrain Controller (CPC) when the anti-tamper vehicle speed message from the Antilock Brake System (ABS) module is not received over the J1939 datalink. The CPC uses the ABS-sourced vehicle speed as a cross-check against the direct vehicle speed sensor (VSS) signal to detect tampering or sensor manipulation. A missing ABS message prevents this validation from occurring.
Note: This fault code indicates a missing message from the antilock brake system (ABS) module.
Note: If any battery-related fault codes are present, repair those first before diagnosing this code.
Probable Causes
- Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) — failed or out-of-range sensor affecting speed signal cross-validation.
- Wiring between the vehicle speed sensor and the ECM — open circuit, short, or damaged harness.
- Engine ECM has recently been reprogrammed improperly — incorrect parameters causing the CPC to expect an ABS message that is not configured.
Symptoms
- Amber warning lamp illuminated on the dash
- SPN 84 FMI 8 logged in the CPC fault memory
- ABS vehicle speed cross-check unavailable
- Speed-related engine functions may be affected
Diagnostic Steps
- Connect diagnostic software (Detroit Diesel DiagnosticLink / DDDL) and confirm the active fault code SPN 84 FMI 8 in the CPC. Note all other active fault codes.
- Check for battery-related faults first — if any battery voltage fault codes are active (e.g., SPN 168 FMI 0, 14, or 18), diagnose and repair those before proceeding. Voltage instability can disrupt J1939 communication and cause this fault.
- Verify CPC/ECM programming — if the ECM or CPC has been recently reprogrammed, confirm the parameters are correct for the vehicle’s ABS system and speed sensor configuration. Improper programming can cause the CPC to expect an ABS anti-tamper message that the installed system does not transmit. Reprogram with the correct configuration if needed.
- Inspect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) — check the VSS for physical damage, proper mounting, and correct air gap. Measure sensor output voltage or resistance and compare to the specification in the Detroit DD13 service manual. Replace the sensor if out of spec.
- Inspect VSS wiring and connector — trace the wiring from the VSS to the ECM connector. Check for open circuits, shorts, chafing, or corrosion. Inspect the connector for bent or pushed-back pins. Repair as needed.
- Check ABS module communication — connect to the ABS module with the appropriate diagnostic tool and verify it is active on the J1939 network and transmitting vehicle speed messages. Check for ABS module fault codes related to wheel speed sensors or J1939 communication errors.
- Check the J1939 datalink — measure resistance across the J1939 datalink (should read approximately 60 ohms with both terminators in place). An open or shorted datalink will prevent ABS messages from reaching the CPC.
- Clear the fault code and perform a road test. Monitor the vehicle speed signal and ABS communication in DDDL live data to confirm the fault does not return.
