Detroit DD13 EPA07 (2007–09) – SPN 84 FMI 9 (CPC): J1939 Wheel-Based Vehicle Speed Signal from Source #2 is Missing

Fault Code Overview

Engine Detroit DD13
Emission Standard EPA07 (2007–2009)
SPN 84
FMI 9
Module CPC (Common Powertrain Controller)
Fault Description J1939 Wheel-Based Vehicle Speed Signal from Source #2 is Missing
Lamp Amber Warning

Fault Code Description

SPN 84 FMI 9 is set by the Common Powertrain Controller (CPC) when the wheel-based vehicle speed signal from J1939 Source #2 is not received. The CPC monitors vehicle speed from multiple J1939 sources (typically the ABS module, transmission, or other controllers) for redundancy and cross-validation. A missing Source #2 signal indicates a J1939 communication failure from the transmitting module, a CPC programming mismatch, battery/electrical issues, or a conflict caused by another module on the datalink network.

Note: Please see the step-by-step troubleshooting procedures for this specific code.

Note: If fault codes for other modules are present, repair those first before diagnosing this code.

Probable Causes

  1. Improper programming of the CPC (Common Powertrain Controller) — incorrect configuration for the vehicle’s speed source modules.
  2. Other failed modules on the truck (Transmission, ABS, Cab controller, etc.) that are no longer transmitting the expected vehicle speed message.
  3. Battery/battery cable issues or other electrical problems on the truck causing J1939 communication instability.

Symptoms

  • Amber warning lamp illuminated on the dash
  • SPN 84 FMI 9 logged in the CPC fault memory
  • Vehicle speed Source #2 absent in DDDL live data
  • Speed-related engine functions (cruise control, speed limiting, engine brake) may be affected

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Connect diagnostic software (Detroit Diesel DiagnosticLink / DDDL) and confirm the active fault code SPN 84 FMI 9 in the CPC. Note all other active fault codes across all modules.
  2. Repair other module faults first — if fault codes are present for the ABS, transmission, cab controller, or other modules, diagnose and repair those before proceeding. A failed module will stop transmitting its J1939 messages, causing this fault.
  3. Check battery and electrical system — inspect battery terminals, cables, and ground connections for corrosion, looseness, or damage. Measure battery voltage and charging system output. Low or unstable voltage can disrupt J1939 communication across all modules.
  4. Verify CPC programming — using DDDL or DiagnosticLink, confirm the CPC is programmed correctly for the vehicle’s speed source configuration. If the CPC is configured to expect a Source #2 message from a module that is not installed or not configured to transmit it, reprogram the CPC with the correct parameters.
  5. Check the J1939 datalink — inspect the J1939 backbone wiring and terminating resistors. Measure resistance across the J1939 datalink (should read approximately 60 ohms with both terminators in place). An open or shorted datalink will prevent modules from communicating.
  6. Identify the Source #2 module — determine which module is configured as the vehicle speed Source #2 (typically ABS or transmission). Connect to that module with the appropriate diagnostic tool and verify it is active on the J1939 network and transmitting the wheel-based vehicle speed message.
  7. Check for datalink conflicts — disconnect suspect modules one at a time while monitoring for fault resolution to identify any module causing J1939 disruption.
  8. Inspect J1939 wiring and connectors — check for damaged, corroded, or loose connectors at the CPC and J1939 datalink junction points. Repair as needed.
  9. Clear the fault code and perform a key cycle. Monitor the vehicle speed Source #2 signal in DDDL live data to confirm it is present and stable. Verify the fault does not return.
