Detroit DD13 EPA07 (2007–09) – SPN 84 FMI 6 (CPC): Vehicle Speed Sensor Anti-Tamper Detection via Antilock Brake System Vehicle Speed Comparison

Fault Code Overview

Engine Detroit DD13
Emission Standard EPA07 (2007–2009)
SPN 84
FMI 6
Module CPC (Common Powertrain Controller)
Fault Description Vehicle Speed Sensor Anti-Tamper Detection via ABS Vehicle Speed Comparison
Lamp Amber Warning

Fault Code Description

SPN 84 FMI 6 is set by the Common Powertrain Controller (CPC) when the vehicle speed reported by the direct Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) does not match the vehicle speed reported by the Antilock Brake System (ABS) module over the J1939 datalink. The CPC compares these two speed sources as an anti-tamper measure. A significant discrepancy between the two signals triggers this fault, indicating a failed or manipulated VSS, wiring issues, or improper ECM programming.

Note: This fault code indicates a discrepancy between the VSS signal and the ABS module vehicle speed message.

Note: If any battery-related fault codes are present, repair those first before diagnosing this code.

Probable Causes

  1. Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) — failed, damaged, or out-of-range sensor producing an incorrect speed signal.
  2. Wiring between the vehicle speed sensor and the ECM — open circuit, short, or damaged harness causing an inaccurate VSS reading.
  3. Engine ECM has recently been reprogrammed improperly — incorrect parameters causing a speed comparison mismatch between the VSS and ABS signals.

Symptoms

  • Amber warning lamp illuminated on the dash
  • SPN 84 FMI 6 logged in the CPC fault memory
  • VSS and ABS vehicle speed readings do not match in DDDL live data
  • Speed-related engine functions (cruise control, speed limiting, engine brake) may be affected

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Connect diagnostic software (Detroit Diesel DiagnosticLink / DDDL) and confirm the active fault code SPN 84 FMI 6 in the CPC. Note all other active fault codes.
  2. Check for battery-related faults first — if any battery voltage fault codes are active (e.g., SPN 168 FMI 0, 14, or 18), diagnose and repair those before proceeding.
  3. Compare VSS and ABS speed in live data — using DDDL, monitor both the direct VSS reading and the ABS-sourced vehicle speed simultaneously during a road test. Identify which signal is incorrect or deviating from actual vehicle speed.
  4. Inspect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) — check the VSS for physical damage, proper mounting, and correct air gap. Measure sensor output voltage or resistance and compare to the specification in the Detroit DD13 service manual. Replace the sensor if out of spec or producing an incorrect signal.
  5. Inspect VSS wiring and connector — trace the wiring from the VSS to the ECM connector. Check for open circuits, shorts, chafing, or corrosion. Inspect the connector for bent or pushed-back pins. Repair as needed.
  6. Verify CPC/ECM programming — if the ECM or CPC has been recently reprogrammed, confirm the parameters are correct for the vehicle’s VSS and ABS configuration. Incorrect axle ratio, tire size, or speed source parameters can cause a comparison mismatch. Reprogram with the correct configuration if needed.
  7. Check ABS module communication — connect to the ABS module with the appropriate diagnostic tool and verify it is transmitting the correct vehicle speed. Check for ABS module fault codes related to wheel speed sensors that may be causing an inaccurate ABS speed reading.
  8. Clear the fault code and perform a road test. Monitor both speed signals in DDDL live data to confirm they match and the fault does not return.
