| FMI | 3 |
| Module | MCM (Motor Control Module) |
| Fault Description | Water-In-Fuel Circuit Failed High |
| Lamp | Amber Warning |
Fault Code Description
SPN 97 FMI 3 is set by the Motor Control Module (MCM) when the water-in-fuel (WIF) sensor circuit voltage is detected above the expected range (failed high). The MCM continuously monitors the WIF sensor signal to detect the presence of water in the fuel system. A voltage that exceeds the maximum threshold indicates a short to voltage (battery or ignition supply), an open return/ground circuit, or a failed sensor.
Common Causes
- Failed WIF sensor with internal short to voltage
- Short to voltage (battery or ignition) in the WIF sensor signal wire
- Open ground or return circuit for the WIF sensor
- Corroded, damaged, or disconnected connector at the fuel filter housing or MCM
- Chafed wiring contacting a voltage source
- Failed MCM (rare)
Symptoms
- Amber warning lamp illuminated on the dash
- SPN 97 FMI 3 logged in the MCM fault memory
- Water-in-fuel warning indicator may be active
- No actual water detection capability while fault is active
Diagnostic Steps
- Connect diagnostic software (Detroit Diesel DiagnosticLink / DDDL) and confirm the active fault code SPN 97 FMI 3 in the MCM.
- Inspect the WIF sensor connector — check for corrosion, moisture intrusion, bent or pushed-back pins, and loose fit. Clean and reseat the connector. Apply dielectric grease if needed.
- Disconnect the WIF sensor and measure the signal wire voltage at the harness connector with the key on. A reading significantly above the sensor supply voltage confirms a short to voltage. Locate and repair the short.
- Check the sensor ground circuit — measure resistance from the sensor ground pin at the harness connector to chassis ground. High resistance or open circuit indicates a broken ground wire. Repair as needed.
- Test the WIF sensor — with the sensor disconnected, measure resistance across the sensor terminals and compare to the specification in the Detroit DD13 service manual. Replace the sensor if out of spec or if the signal wire voltage returns to normal with the sensor disconnected.
- Inspect the harness — trace the WIF sensor wiring from the fuel filter housing to the MCM connector. Look for chafing, pinched wires, or insulation damage that could cause a short to voltage. Repair as needed.
- Clear the fault code and perform a key cycle. Monitor the WIF sensor signal in DDDL live data to confirm the circuit is operating within the normal voltage range.
- Replace the MCM only if all wiring, connector, and sensor checks pass and the fault persists.
